A Few Degrees From Release

A Few Degrees From Release is a sound installation centred on a plain door that seems integral to the exhibition space. Suddenly, a loud metallic bang erupts from behind the closed door, leaving its source hidden.

As the strikes occur at irregular intervals, the viewer anticipates the next impact, creating a sense of tension. The silence between the blows gradually builds, making the door feel less like a neutral architectural element and more like a barrier containing something monstrous behind it. Each sudden bang reverberates through the space, unsettling the quiet and making the waiting increasingly uncomfortable.

The title refers to the small temperature increases that can push complex systems toward critical thresholds. At the same time, “degrees” also suggests rising levels of tension—moments when pressure accumulates before reaching a boiling point.

In this minimal setting, the work creates an allegorical environment where an apparently stable space is repeatedly disturbed by unseen forces. This mirrors the uneasy awareness of pressures mounting beyond what we can easily perceive.
