“...I had not foreseen to what an extent this return to the mentality of children would come to blur the differ- ence between works of art and other man-made objects. The French artist Marcel Duchamp (1887- 1968) acquired fame and notoriety for taking any such object (which he called a “ ready-made”) and signing it with his name, and a much younger artist, Joseph Beuys (1921-86), in Germany followed him, claiming that he had widened or extended the notion of “art”. I sincerely hope that I did not contribute to this fashion - for it became a fashion - when I opened these pages with the remark that “there really is no such thing as Art".
